Out of one breeding season...and right into another!
Despite things slowing down in winter, preparing for the upcoming breeding season keeps our rangers busy. We provide a few different bird species with nest boxes, which mimic the natural cavities found in larger trees. These boxes need to be cleaned and refurbished before spring. Any new nest boxes also need to be built and put out in the sanctuary well in advance of breeding, so that birds have time to check them out as potential nest sites.
We also order bird bands to band chicks as the breeding season progresses. These coloured bands act a bit like a name badge and each unique colour combination tells us who is who in a population. This is important for monitoring and also for research purposes.
