Diurnal missions
As we move into our hotter months of the year, occasionally there are kiwi pukupuku spotted during the day. While normally they only come out during the night, the drier ground and shorter nights can make it harder for them to get enough food while it is dark. Hence, some kiwi may choose to pull an “all-dayer” and fit in some extra foraging during daylight hours.
If you see any kiwi out during the day, please let sleeping (or awake) kiwi lie and give them their space—and encourage others to do so as well. If you are worried about a bird (e.g., if it is injured or behaving oddly), please contact a Zealandia staff member.
