VolunteerING At ZEALANDIA

Our volunteers help us with a wide range of tasks and activities around Zealandia. They come from all walks of life and are passionate supporters of the work we do.

Volunteer roles require varying levels of skills, experience, availability and fitness. While some roles are seasonal, other opportunities are weekly, fortnightly or monthly. Many roles require a longer-term commitment, ideally a minimum of six months. You must be over 18 years of age, and acceptance is dependent on a satisfactory police check.

Infrastructure & Facilities

Infrastructure and facilities volunteers help our Rangers in looking after the infrastructure and facilities that keeps Zealandia running, from track maintenance to biosecurity.

Track maintenance

This team helps to keep our tracks in good order for our visitors. Full training will be provided. This is an outdoors-based team that usually work every Tuesday morning or the second Saturday of each month.

Wednesday workgroup

This group supports our Rangers in maintenance work and odd-jobs every Wednesday morning. This is a perfect role for retirees or part-time workers with general DIY skills. You'll need to enjoy working with a small close-knit group of like-minded people and be willing to turn your hand to any jobs that come up.

Perimeter Maintenance

Every Thursday morning this team works alongside our rangers, helping to maintain the biosecurity buffer zone between the fence and vegetation. This is a physical role but essential to the integrity of the security and safety of the sanctuary.

Restorative Gardening Team

This group meets every Wednesday 10am-12pm to restore and maintain the native plants growing in public-facing areas throughout the sanctuary by weeding, mulching, transplanting seedlings, and cleaning up garden edges. You'll work within the lower valley in easily accessible areas both inside and outside the sanctuary. Plant ID skills and a passion for plants would be super helpful!

Fence Monitors

Taking around 1-2 hours to check, this role is perfect for people living around our fence line or in the surrounding area. You don't need access to the sanctuary, so you can do your check at a time that suits you, on the day that you are rostered.

Ranger Assistants

Ranger Assistants work alongside Infrastructure rangers and other volunteers on different projects which could include vegetation clearing, track work, clearing drains, fence maintenance or other smaller jobs that come up from day to day. They must have a good level of fitness to do this role and have sturdy footwear and clothing appropriate for all weathers. Weekday Ranger Assistants work on a Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday 9am-3pm, while weekend Ranger Assistants work fortnightly on Sundays 10am-3pm.

Avi-Aiders

Avi-aiders prepare and replenish the sugar water for hihi and korimako at our bird feeding stations in the Lower and Upper Valley. Accurate records of food use are kept as part of the task. Each round takes approximately 1-3 hours and you'll be expected to be available in all weathers.

Kākā Feeders

Kākā feeders prepare and replenish supplementary food at two kākā feeder station sites in the Lower Valley. Like Avi-aiding, it is a daily task which operates in all weathers. Feeding takes place between 12noon and 2pm and takes about two hours.

Seasonal Conservation

There are a range of seasonal opportunities available including bird-focused conservation tasks, annual tracking tunnel audit and a range of other activities. Some of these tasks involve a data entry component. Good boots and wet weather gear are basic requirements.

Visitor Experience

As a visitor destination, our aim is to provide the best possible experience for visitors. To achieve this, we provide comprehensive training which equips our volunteers with the knowledge and confidence about our place to share our stories with visitors.

Visitor Experience Volunteers

Visitor Experience Volunteers provide a warm welcome to visitors, offer assistance as required, and deliver our programme of free mini talks. Volunteers in this team are enthusiastic advocates for conservation. They care about connecting people with nature and sharing our stories to inspire others.

Volunteer Skippers

Volunteer Skippers provide an on-water experience for visitors, taking them around the lower reservoir on our iconic electric boat, the Ara Kawau. Skippers need a Day Skippers License or higher and attend training with the visitor experience volunteers, as well as specific health and safety training for the boat.

Night Guide Assistants

Night Guide Assistants work with Night Guides to deliver exceptional visitor experiences in the sanctuary after closing hours on Zealandia by Night and Twilight tours. They are volunteers who are very familiar with the sanctuary, confident working in the dark, have great physical fitness, and are able to manage well in the event of an emergency.
